Many people think CBD oil is like marijuana. While they may both come from the same plant, they are not the same thing. When it comes to drug testing, there is even more confusion about whether or not CBD can result in a positive drug test.
Can CBD oil result in a positive drug test? Well, it depends on a few things.
What is in CBD Oil?
CBD oil is made from hemp and is derived from the ingredient cannabidiol, or CBD. Hemp & marijuana both produce CBD, as well as THC, but FDA regulations require that CBD products.
The Difference Between Hemp and Marijuana
We dive deeper into the difference between hemp and marijuana in a previous post. In short, hemp and marijuana are both part of the cannabis sativa plant family. However, hemp contains very little THC (0.3% or less).
Does CBD show up on a Drug Test?
CBD oil can show up on a drug test. Several factors affect the likelihood that you will test positive after using CBD.
If the product you buy is created ethically and follows FDA regulations (0.3 % THC levels or less), the test will probably not pick up the substance because the amount is so low.
However, even with trace amounts, there is still a chance it could be picked up. For example, people metabolize CBD at different rates.
One method to play it safe is to do an at-home drug test. If THC shows up, take a break from using CBD for 2-3 weeks so it has enough time to leave your system. At-home drug testing and laboratory drug testing may trigger false-positives. Always get a second opinion after positive home CBD tests.
Check your Local Laws and be Proactive
CBD oil is legal in most states within the U.S., but it’s important to check your local laws to ensure you won’t be penalized.
It’s a good idea to check ingredients in the CBD products you buy as well. Since the industry is still fairly unregulated, you can’t be too sure as to the efficacy and quality of the ingredients. We rigorously test our products here at Straight Hemp, and share lab results for each product and batch so you know exactly what’s in the CBD oil you buy.
Our products are made from hemp-based essential oils, including terpenes. These essential oil cultivars are distilled from the highest quality ingredients. Others select hemp for fiber, like industrial hemp, but the therapeutic compounds aren’t as prevalent as they are with essential oil cultivars.
Straight Hemp also pursues organic ingredients to stay as natural and pure as possible, resulting in a better product that is less likely to result in a failed drug test.
Communicate with your Employer
Communicate with your employer upfront about using CBD oil to provide an explanation to the drug test results. Provide your employer with lab results and medical documentation from your healthcare provider. By being proactive about your drug test, can help you avoid headaches later on.
