Elderberry extract and Cannabidiol (CBD) are plant compounds which offer a host of benefits that may aid in optimal health and vibrancy. Both elderberry and CBD possess unique therapeutic properties on their own, and when used in combination, they form a powerful wellness ally. Black Elderberry (Sambucus nigra) and CBD (derived from Cannabis) are both plants with a long history of use which have been studied for a wide variety of health benefits, including enhanced immunity, anti-inflammatory properties, pain reduction, anxiety and more.
Elderberries have been used for hundreds of years as an immune system booster, particularly in the treatment of influenza, colds and sinusitis. They may also support heart health and fight inflammation and infections. Elderberries are high in nutrients and antioxidants, such as Vitamin C, phenolic acids, flavonols, and anthocyanins. These compounds can reduce oxidative stress and inflammation in the body. In one study, 15ml of elderberry syrup relieved symptoms of influenza A and B infections 4 days earlier, on average, and required less rescue medication than placebo groups. Another study indicated that elderberry extracts may reduce the length and severity of cold symptoms in air travelers.
Cannabidiol is a naturally occurring compound derived from the cannabis plant and, like elderberry, it’s been used for thousands of years to support improved health. CBD has a wide variety of possible benefits and applications. The human body has an endocannabinoid system and produces endogenous endocannabinoids which are neurotransmitters that can bind to cannabinoid receptors and impact functions such as pain, sleep, appetite, and immune response. Studies indicate that cannabinoids have a significant pain reducing effect as compared to placebos.
CBD may also have a calming effect on the central nervous system, which may be beneficial for anxiety-related disorders. There’s also evidence that supports CBD as “a treatment for generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, obsessive–compulsive disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder when administered acutely”. Another study suggests antidepressant effects in animals.
CBD may also be beneficial for sleep, with several studies suggesting that “cannabinoids could improve sleep quality, decrease sleep disturbances, and decrease sleep onset latency”.
Finally, CBD may also benefit the heart and circulatory system, have neuroprotective effects, and alleviate cancer-related symptoms. Elderberry and CBD offer a wide variety of potential health benefits, and as research continues, it’s likely that we’ll continue to learn more about how these plants can help us live healthier, happier lives.
